urabaya Mayor Eri Cahyadi started to inspect all buildings of pesantren (Islamic boarding schools) operating in the East Java provincial capital and will renew their building permits (IMB) if meeting standards.

He said that all Islamic boarding schools which were registered with the Religious Affairs Ministry already had their IMBs but his office would renew their building permits in accordance with their latest conditions.

“So, in Surabaya, all pesantren registered with the Religious Affairs Ministry already have IMBs,” Eri said in Pesantren Ndresmo on Monday, as quoted by Kompas.com.

Eri said that the city administration would cooperate with Sepuluh Nopember Institute of Technology (ITS) to inspect the condition of buildings at some 1,100 Islamic boarding schools in Surabaya.

“We will adjust whether the existing IMB still reflects the current building condition,” he said.

“If it is still the same, we will then check the strength of the concrete [structure].”
