measles outbreak killed one child in Pekanbaru while another outbreak killed 20 children in Sumenep regency, East Java, prompting the government to launch immunization drives in both locations to prevent the contagious disease from spreading further.

The Pekanbaru Health Agency recorded 627 suspected measles cases in the Riau provincial capital with 90 confirmed cases. City health agency head Hazli Fendriyanto said Pekanbaru was one of regions with the highest number of measles cases in the province in 2025.

“That’s why we urge the public to be aware of the disease transmission,” he said on Monday.

He said that parents should not underestimate the disease as it has already killed a child in Pekanbaru.

“The victim was an elementary school pupil from Jadirejo subdistrict in Sukajadi district,” he said.

Hazli said measles is caused by the measles virus and is very contagious. Measles can spread very fast through saliva droplets when the patient coughs, sneezes or talks.
