arious quarters expressed concern about the latest Bali provincial bylaw requiring drivers of tourism-focused rental vehicles to have Bali ID cards (KTP) and use vehicles with the Bali license plate, saying the bylaw might be discriminatory to non-Balinese residents.

Chairman of online taxi drivers’ association Garda Indonesia, Igun Wicaksono, emphasized professional solidarity and asked that the regulation not target drivers due to their residential status.

He said there were socio-economic risks if drivers without Bali KTPs are prohibited to operate after having worked on the island for quite some time.

“By banning drivers without a Bali KTP, there will be a loss in employment access for those who are already currently working as online drivers,” he said on Tuesday, as quoted by tribunnews.com.

“The regional administration and Balinese customary leaders should consider wisely and intelligently not to remove someone’s rights to work in Bali.”
