T

wenty-seven people are missing and more than 800 have been evacuated after a massive landslide struck Pandanarum village in Central Java's Banjarnegara regency over the weekend.

The National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) reported that the natural disaster occurred at around 4 p.m. on Saturday. Hours of heavy rainfall caused a large hill in the village to collapse, burying 30 houses, farms and rice paddies under debris.

The landslide has so far claimed two lives and injured two others. As of Monday, 27 residents are still unaccounted for and are feared buried under the rubble.

“Search and rescue operations began immediately after the disaster. So far, rescuers have evacuated 34 residents who fled to nearby forests to escape the landslide, and teams are continuing efforts to reach those believed to be trapped under the debris,” BNPB spokesperson Abdul Muhari said on Monday.

Rescue efforts, however, have been hindered by unstable terrain, with parts of the landslide area continuing to shift, complicating access to victims.
