T

he National Police’s Counterterrorism Special Detachment 88 (Densus 88) has arrested five individuals accused of recruiting children and students into terrorist networks, including one suspect described as a “veteran” previously linked to the Islamic State militant group.

At a press conference on Tuesday, Densus 88 spokesperson Adj. Sr. Comr. Mayndra Eka Wardhana said the arrests were made in three separate operations carried out from late December to Monday.

The five suspects, identified by their initials, are FW, 47, from Medan, North Sumatra, LM, 23, from Banggai, Central Sulawesi, PP, 37, from Sleman, Yogyakarta, MPSO, 18, from Tegal, Central Java and ZZS, 19, from Agam, West Sumatra.

Mayndra, however, did not disclose which suspect was linked to the militant group.

“He already served a prison term. After his release, he attempted to recruit several children again,” he said, as quoted by Antara, adding that his arrest enabled investigators to uncover a wider network and track down the remaining suspects.

He also revealed that one of the five had planned an attack targeting the House of Representatives’ building, though he withheld the suspect’s identity and details of the plot.
