T

he police named driver Gilang Insan F, 22, as a suspect in a road accident on Monday involving an intercity bus on a toll road in Semarang, Central Java, that killed 16 people and injured dozens others.

“We named him as a suspect in the case after investigators with the Semarang Police traffic unit [Satlantas] decided to continue the probe following an internal case review,” Semarang Police chief Sr. Comr. M. Syahduddi said on Tuesday evening.

He added the case review was held on Tuesday afternoon after investigators questioned several witnesses and examined pieces of evidence. After being named a suspect, Gilang was detained at the Semarang Police headquarters in the city.

Investigators charged Gilang with Article 310 (2), (3) and (4) of the 2009 Traffic Law that stipulates negligence in driving that causes injury or death of a passenger or more. The article carries a maximum punishment of six years in prison.

During the investigation, the driver claimed he drove the bus, operated by private intercity bus operator Cahaya Trans, at a high speed after passing the Kalikangkung Tollgate in Semarang toward Krapyak highway interchange.

Gilang lost control of the bus when the vehicle entered a downhill curve, according to Syahduddi. The driver tried to turn the wheel, but the bus hit a road barrier on the right side of the highway, causing the vehicle to overturn.
