Bus crash on Central Java toll road kills 16, injures 18 

A fatal bus crash in Semarang killed 16 passengers on Monday as millions of people started departing for their year-end holidays, renewing concerns about the safety of commercial bus services.

t least 16 people were killed and 18 others injured when an intercity bus crashed into a road barrier on a toll road in Semarang, Central Java, in the early hours on Monday.

Budiono, head of the Semarang branch of the National Search and Rescue Agency (Basarnas) said the bus was carrying 34 passengers and was en route to Yogyakarta from Bekasi, West Java.

“Although the exact cause of the accident is still under investigation, it is believed that the bus was traveling at a fairly high speed when it reached a curve at a highway interchange,” he said on Dec. 22.

“The bus overturned after hitting a road barrier at around 12:30 a.m.”

A joint rescue team of personnel from Basarnas Semarang, the Indonesian Red Cross and state-owned toll road operator PT Jasa Marga was deployed immediately to evacuate the passengers.
