atural disasters triggered by extreme weather continued to mar the year-end holiday, with the latest being floods in South Kalimantan that affected thousands of people.
At least three regencies and a city in South Kalimantan were hit by flooding over the past week, including in Balangan, where heavy rainfalls on Friday night caused rivers to overflow, according to the National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB).
The one-meter-high flash floods in Balangan swept through three districts of Tebing Tinggi, Awayan and Halong, affecting more than 260 people and inundating the main roads connecting their villages. No fatalities were recorded as of Sunday.
In nearby Hulu Sungai Selatan regency, heavy rainfall on Saturday triggered flooding in four districts. While no fatalities were also recorded in Hulu Sungai Selatan, nearly 3,000 people were displaced from their homes, according to the search and rescue team which cited data from the regency’s disaster mitigation agency (BPBD).
“The flood victims were evacuated to the shelter in Kandangan City Square [...] the number reached 2,895 people,” I Putu Sudayana, head of the Banjarmasin Search and Rescue Agency, said on Saturday, as quoted by Antara.
The flooding came weeks after the South Kalimantan administration declared an alert status for floods, landslides and whirlwinds, locally known as puting beliung, in Balangan from Nov. 12 of this year to Jan. 31 of next year, noting that the region is entering the peak of the rainy season.
