elalawan Prosecutor’s Office in Riau has named 14 suspects in a subsidized fertilizer swindling case dating back to 2019-2022. Of the 14, 13 were immediately detained at three separate detention centers for adults, women and children in Riau’s provincial capital of Pekanbaru.
Pelawawan chief prosecutor Siswanto said the alleged subsidized fertilizer irregularities took place in the districts of Bandar Petalangan, Bunut and Pangkalan Kuras.
“The suspects were named based on legal and complete evidence and meet the criminal criteria as stipulated by regulations,” he said on Wednesday.
“They will be detained for the next 20 days.”
Siswanto said that audit results by Riau Provincial Inspectorate found state losses amounting to Rp 34.37 billion (US$203,171). Pangkalan Kuras had the largest irregularities at Rp 18.9 billion, followed by Bunut district at Rp 9.2 billion and Bandar Petalangan at Rp 6.2 billion.
The suspects’ modus operandi was through irregularities in distributing fertilizers and sales of fertilizers outside the official mechanism.
“These practices harmed farmers who should have been the beneficiaries of the subsidized fertilizers.”
