A

hiker trekking on Mount Lawu, who was missing for almost a month, was finally found dead along a river in Mongkrang Hill in Tawangmangu district, Karanganyar regency, Central Java, on Tuesday morning by search and rescue (SAR) workers.

Karanganyar Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD) executive director Hendro Prayitno said SAR workers found the remains of Yazid Ahmad Firdaus in a place difficult to reach. The terrain was steep, slippery and highly risky for SAR workers.

“The track was extreme, along a river. We must be extra cautious,” he said on Tuesday.

A resident in Gawanan, Colomadu district, Karangayar regency, Central Java, Yazid’s body was still intact when found. His identity, shoes and socks were also found around the area. This made his identification process easy before his body being evacuated.

Yazid was declared missing on Jan. 18 when ascending Mount Lawu through Mongkrang Hill. SAR operations started on Jan. 19 for 14 days but were fruitless. The search was then halted. Bad weather obstructed the search operations.

“The plan to use drone was cancelled several times because of strong winds,” Mongkrang Hill SAR Post coordinator Yohan Tri Anggoro said.
