R

iau province has accelerated livestock vaccination campaigns as foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) cases continue to rise in the region.

FMD is a highly contagious viral disease affecting cloven-hoofed animals such as cattle, goats and sheep. Infected animals typically develop fever followed by painful blisters, or vesicles, in the mouth and on the feet, which can impair mobility and sharply reduce productivity.

While the disease generally has a low fatality rate in adult livestock, typically below 5 percent, it can be significantly more lethal among young animals, with mortality rates reaching 20 percent or higher in severe cases.

Faralinda Sari, head of the Animal Health division at the Riau Animal Husbandry and Animal Health Agency, said more than 400 animals across six regencies have been infected since the start of the year.

“Indragiri Hulu regency was the worst affected with 195 cases, followed by Rokan Hulu regency with 145 cases,” she said on Wednesday.

The number of FMD cases in Riau this year has already surpassed last year’s total. In 2025, Riau recorded 304 cases, while 480 cases have been reported in just the first two months of 2026.

Faralinda attributed the outbreak to the ongoing rainy season, which facilitates viral transmission, as well as high livestock mobility across the region and low vaccination coverage.
