T

he parents of Fandi Ramadhan, a ship crew facing the death penalty in a two-tonne narcotics smuggling case, have sought legal assistance from top lawyer Hotman Paris to defend their son, while the Indonesian Seafarers Rights Guard (SAKTI) has launched a petition rejecting capital punishment.

"I just arrived at Hotman Paris' office in Jakarta. His mother, who always attends court hearings, is also present," Fandi father, Sulaiman told The Jakarta Post over the phone on Friday.

Sulaiman requested assistance from the renowned lawyer because he believes his 22-year-old son - who had only worked three days aboard the tanker Sea Dragon to support his siblings’ schooling - was innocent.

Fandi previously earned Rp 2.5 million (US$148.25) on a small cargo ship.

Previously on Feb. 5, the prosecutor demanded the death penalty for all six defendants in a smuggling case of nearly two tonnes of methamphetamine during a trial at the Batam District Court in Riau Islands.

The six defendants, consisting of two Thais and four Indonesians, were found guilty of involvement in an international narcotics network, the prosecutor said.
