Pelita Air Service aircraft carrying One Price Fuel supplies crashed on Thursday in the Krayan mountainous area, Nunukan regency, North Kalimantan, killing its single pilot.

The pilot, Capt. Hendrick Lodewyck Adam, was found dead at the crash site in Pa’ Ramayo area in East Krayan district. The aircraft was reported lost contact at about 12:20 p.m. local time before residents saw it diving and emitting black smoke.

“Villagers heard a loud bang after seeing the aircraft roll,” a witness said in Krayan.

The Air Tractor AT-802 aircraft with registration number PK-PAA had just delivered 4,000 liters of fuel to Luvai Semaring Airport in Long Bawan village, Krayan district, and was on its way back to Tarakan city, the largest city in North Kalimantan.

Other than carrying fuel, the aircraft also sometimes carries 12-kilogram liquified petroleum gas (LPG) canisters.

The aircraft is used as a tanker to carry One Price Fuel to border areas which do not have road access. The One Price Fuel program guarantees that the official fuel price remains the same across the country. Before the program, the price of a 12-kg LPG canister could reach Rp 600,000 (US$35,58). The official price for North Kalimantan is Rp 229,000.
