n effort to smuggle 200 tonnes of illegal mangrove charcoal to Malaysia through the waters of Riau province was foiled by an Indonesian Navy’s joint team on March 5.
The attempt was thwarted after the naval base received an intelligence report on a ship suspected to carry mangrove charcoal without legitimate documents from Meranti Islands regency to Malaysia.
The Dumai Naval Base’s Maritime Security Patrol (Patkamla) Quick Response Team together with the Indonesian Navy Intelligence Center’s (Pusintelal) Maritime Intelligence Unit (Satintelmar) Task Force and the First Fleet Command’s (Koarmada) Maritime Intelligence (Intelmar) Operations Task Force conducted a pursuit and inspection of ships sailing around Selat Panjang and surrounding ports.
“The first team, consisting of First Koarmada Intelmar Operations Task Force and Dumai Naval Base Patkamla personnel moved from Tanjung Buton Maritime Potential Post [Siak Naval Post] toward Selat Panjang waters using Sea Raider boat to conduct observation and surveillance upon the suspected boat,” Dumai Naval Base commanding officer Col. Abdul Haris said on Friday.
“At almost the same time, the second time consisting of personnel from Pusintelal and Dumai Naval Base moved to Selat Panjang Naval Post to strengthen surveillance.”
The surveillance teams finally detected KLM Samudera Indah Jaya GT 172, the ship suspected of carrying the mangrove charcoal from illegal logging activities, at a private port in Sungai Nyirih waters in Meranti Islands, at about 10:44 a.m.
Before taking enforcement actions, the joint team consolidated at Selat Panjang Naval Post while continuing surveillance from ashore.
