he Nagoya central business district (CBD) in Batam, the Riau Islands, known as the city's business, trade and entertainment hub, is set to build a new architectural icon: its tallest building.
The new building is located in a facility integrated with the Jabal Arafah Mosque, which is part of the ambition Kota Madani (civilized city) vision announced on Saturday by the by Arafah Batam Foundation, which manages the mosque.
“Pray for us, we are finalizing a plot of land to the right of the mosque," Asman Abnur, who heads the foundation’s board of patrons, told worshipers gathered at the three-story mosque prior to Idul Fitri prayers.
“Inshallah, we will build the highest building in Nagoya,” he added.
Asman explained that aside from aiming to be Batam's highest building, the planned structure aimed to realize the Kota Madani concept pioneered under mayor Nyat Kadir in 2001-2005, whom he had served as vice mayor.
The former mayor died in September 2024, aged 75.
As a symbol of modern religiosity, the new building would be topped with a dome to reflect the identity of civilized Islam, said Asman, who was administrative and bureaucratic reforms minister in 2016-2018, during the first term of president Joko "Jokowi" Widodo.
