undreds of victims of recent hydrometeorological disasters staged a rally in front of the Langkat regent’s office in North Sumatra on Monday, demanding the disbursement of stimulant assistance from the central government.
They claimed they had not received assistance in the five months since the floods and landslides, while other victims had received aid from the Social Affairs Ministry.
The protesters, who came from Besitang and West Berandan districts, were angry and toppled the office compound’s gate and breached a security barricade set up by police officers and Langkat Public Order Agency officers. They demanded to see Langkat Regent Syah Afandin, who was reportedly in Jakarta.
The crowd was addressed by Lankgat Police chief Adj. Sr. Comr. David Triyo Prasojo who opened a dialogue with the protesters and Syah by phone, which was broadcast through the phone speaker.
Syah said the regency administration was fighting hard on behalf of the victims with the central government, especially in relation to the disbursement of stimulant aid from the ministry.
“Currently we’re continuing to coordinate with the central government because such assistance is within their remit,” he told the crowd by speaker phone.
