ndonesia has taken various steps to reduce forest and land fires in the past decade, leading to a reduction by 86 percent in the number of fires, Forestry Minster Raja Juli Antoni said on May 11.

“The steps included strengthening the prevention system and integrating early warning, stricter law enforcement and community-based approaches at the site level,” he said, as quoted in a press release.

Speaking during the 21st session of the United Nations Forum on Forests (UNFF21) at the UN headquarters in New York City, the United States, he claimed that it was real evidence of President Prabowo Subianto in strengthening climate actions through sustainable protection of forest ecosystem.

The positive achievement continued in the period of 2024-2025, when Indonesia recorded a significant forest and land fires decrease. The decrease was supported by the strengthened hotspot monitoring and extinguishment quick response by joint teams in the field.

Despite a decreasing trend, Raja Juli gave a special warning on climate conditions this year. Based on weather data analysis, the El Nino phenomenon will happen again with an intensity of low to moderate in June, which may cause a longer dry season.

“We must be more careful this year. A potential longer dry season because of El Nino requires high alertness from us,” he said.
