Labor unions and university students have once again taken to the streets in Jakarta to protest against the Job Creation Law, this time expressing their discontent in conjunction with the commemoration of Youth Pledge Day on Wednesday.

The Jakarta Police have dispatched both uniformed and plainclothes officers to patrol the city's major streets to prevent robbery against cyclists.

“No matter what, we are the majority. We need a leader who shares our beliefs,” the teacher wrote.

West Java Governor Ridwan Kamil has decided to extend the proportional large-scale social restrictions (PSBB) for Greater Bogor, Depok and Greater Bekasi (Bodebek) for a month.

Schools were also instructed to give students additional work during the time of the planned protests.

With just two years left in office and a long list of campaign promises to fulfill, Jakarta Governor Anies Baswedan has his work cut out for him, with city councillors and experts pointing to subpar city achievements amid a raging COVID-19 outbreak.

The extra preparation is made ahead of the extended public holiday from Oct. 28 to Nov. 1 to prevent a major increase in COVID-19 cases.

Security authorities have deployed 18,000 personnel to beef up security amid the continuing protests against the controversial Job Creation Law by university students in Central Jakarta on Friday.

The mayor has allowed restaurants and other dining venues to resume dine-in services after the West Java city was downgraded to an "orange zone" for moderate risk of COVID-19 infection.

“We are still updating the data since we are still receiving reports through our hotline and our field team,” Community Legal Aid Institute director Muhammad Afif Abdul Qoyim said.

What began as a peaceful protest against the Job Creation Law turned into riots on Tuesday as violent opposition to the controversial law continued in the capital city.

Apart from expressing opposition to the Job Creation Law, protesters also recited chants voicing their desire for President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo to step down.

As of 2 p.m., crowds of protesters had gathered near the State Palace at the Arjuna Wijaya monument, also known as the Horse Statue, in Central Jakarta. 

A joint force of more than 9,300 security personnel has been deployed to secure the capital as protests against the newly passed bill continue for the second week.

The transitional period will last at least until Oct. 25.

The Jakarta Health Agency will trace the contacts of the 14 people.

The city's fire department is offering a free disinfection service for residential areas, while industrial estates are stepping up their efforts to disinfect their facilities following a spate of clusters at factories in Jakarta and beyond.
