Govt to build botanical gardens in eastern regions

he Indonesian Institute of Sciences (LIPI) plans to establish botanical gardens in a number of regions, especially in eastern regions such as West Nusa Tenggara (NTB) and East Nusa Tenggara (NTT).
"The challenge for the Botanical Garden Plant Conservation Center [PKT] is to develop innovations, expand botanical gardens in areas with low rainfall in eastern Indonesia like NTB and NTT, or islands that have soil with limited water content," said LIPI head Prof. Iskandar Zulkarnai during a seminar on botanical gardens and water resources management in Bogor, West Java, on Tuesday as reported by Antara news agency.

He added that a botanical garden played an important role as a conservation area and buffer zone to retain water in soil.
The head of Botanical Garden PKT and Bogor Botanical Garden, Didik Widyatmoko, said LIPI aimed to build at least 47 regional botanical gardens by 2030, or two to three gardens per year.
Indonesia currently has 20 botanical gardens and is preparing to establish 23 new ones in the near future. (vod/kes)
