Balinese painter I Nyoman Gunarsa passed away at Sanglah Hospital in Denpasar on Sunday. He was 73.

The renowned painter had been treated in the intensive care unit since Thursday, said Sanglah Hospital spokesman I Dewa Ketut Kresna.

“On Sept. 7, he was taken to the hospital for a high fever and immediately received intensive treatment. He died at 11:15 a.m. on Sunday morning,” he told The Jakarta Post on Sunday.

Gunarsa was previously hospitalized for heart and kidney diseases. 

He is survived by his wife, three children and seven grandchildren.

Gunarsa was well-known for his dedication to classic Balinese art and owned his owned museum of classical paintings in Klungkung regency, Bali.

He exhibited his works both domestically and abroad.

“I am deeply saddened by this loss. He was a role model, a figure who gave me great advice. My deepest condolences to his family,” said Klungkung Regent I Nyoman Suwirta. 

Many Balinese artists also conveyed their condolences through social media, including painter Wayan Redika who referred to Gunarsa as his teacher and motivator.

Gunarsa was known as a high-spirited personality. Even in his weak physical condition, he held an exhibition at Bentara Budaya Jakarta on Aug. 14, marking 60 years of a career filled with accolades and achievements. Earlier in August, President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo visited Gunarsa’s museum.
