The Transformers franchise will be releasing their first spin-off movie this year, focusing on the popular yellow Transformer.

Titled Bumblebee, this movie will be set in the 1980s and is slated to hit theaters Dec. 21.

In a teaser trailer Paramount released last Tuesday, fans are introduced to Charlie (Hailee Steinfield), a teenager who accidentally discovers the Autobot in disguise.

The movie will be directed by Travis Knight and written by Christina Hodson. The change in director's seat from Michael Bay to Knight has led many people to believe that the Transformers series might be heading into a new era. Ever since Transformers 7 was removed from Paramount Pictures' calendar, the writers have had the opportunity to make a transition from the macho approach of Michael Bay’s previous films.

As stated by The Hollywood Reporter, “The trailer leaves behind the Michael Bay-isms of the previous installments and instead offers a sense of earnestness.”

Since The Last Knight, the fifth in the series, was released, it has been a punching bag for critics. The movie had reportedly disappointed fans with its overwhelming amount of plot lines.

The film received a 17 percent rating at movie review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes and was criticized by The Guardian’s Peter Bradshaw, who said it was “in a very short supply” of wit and fun.

It is hoped that Bumblebee will be able to revive old Transformers fans and attract new ones. (ely/wng)
