round 79 percent of Indonesian female internet users access the internet for social media, according to Statistics Indonesia (BPS) data.
“Followed by news at 64 percent, entertainment at 41 percent, work at 28 percent and e-mail at 20 percent,” said BPS poverty statistics section head Nur Sahrizal at a seminar on Data Publication and Information on Women's Empowerment and Child Protection on Nov. 27 in Jakarta as reported by Antara.
Of the regions, Jakarta has the highest rate of internet usage at 57 percent, while Papua has the lowest at 14 percent. Smartphones are the most common media used to access the internet (91 percent), followed by laptops (22 percent) and PCs (16 percent).

Overall, 68 percent of Indonesian female phone users access the internet, with the figure in suburban areas at 74 percent and in urban areas 61 percent.
The seminar was a joint effort by BPS and the Women's Empowerment and Child Protection Ministry. The minister, through her secretary Pribudiarta Nur Sitepu, said information was crucial in development and governance.
“Especially in making decisions, setting up regulations, evaluating policies and justifying solutions to problems,” she added. (iru/kes)
