akarta may not be the place for a classic white Christmas, but holiday festivities are sure to welcome you whenever you step into its malls. Lively thematic installations in mall atriums often come with exciting activities that visitors and families can participate in.

The Pacific Place mall in SCBD, for instance, presents a Mary Poppins-themed installation in collaboration with the Disney Corp. The installation is in the mall’s atrium, complete with a part suspended from its towering ceiling.

Visitors of the mall flock to the installation during opening hours, taking turns to take selfies at different parts of the installation, including a bathtub and a giant handbag. A schedule of choir and dance performances enlivens the installation and there is also a Mary Poppins Returns interactive night of storytelling, music, dance and movies at @america on Dec. 21.

The installation is to remain in the mall’s atrium until early January.

While Pacific Place presents an installation connected with a newly released movie, Mall Taman Anggrek marks the holiday festivities with a Christmas with We Bare Bears exhibition that is to run until Jan. 6.

We Bare Bears is an animated series from TV's Cartoon Network. It tells the tales of three bear brothers Grizzly, Panda and Ice Bear trying to fit in with the high-tech human world. The show is based on a webcomic by cartoonist Daniel Chong.

The exhibition has festooned Taman Anggrek Mall’s center atrium with Christmas decorations and pop-up stores selling snacks and desserts. The mall’s signature four display windows each showcase marionettes of the three bears in Christmas settings.

“We chose We Bare Bears because it’s trendy and educational for young children,” Taman Anggrek Mall's advertising and promotion manager, Elvira Indriasari, told The Jakarta Post at a press conference.

This is We Bare Bears’ first Christmas visit to Indonesia. The Cartoon Network has been taking the bears on a tour to countries such as South Korea, Japan and China.

The Cartoon Network’s Southeast Asia licensing agent partner, Carol Tan, said that the bears have been receiving plenty of interest from Indonesia.

“We could see that from the merchandise sales of regional partners such as Miniso,” she said.

The exhibition is open at 6 p.m. on Wednesdays and Fridays and at 2 p.m. and 6 p.m. on weekends. Visitors can book a 20-minute photo session with the bears by spending Rp 500,000 in Taman Anggrek or Rp 300,000 at the We Bare Bears merchandise stores on weekends.

However, the photo sessions on weekdays do not require shopping beforehand.

Meanwhile at the Senayan City mall, Christmas festivities are leaning toward a contemporary theme by presenting City of Light in collaboration with Signify (the new name of Phillips lighting that is to be officially announced in January).

City of Light, an installation that introduces innovative lighting technology called the Interact IoT (Internet of Things) platform, features a 16-meter-high “Gaze of Light” tower as its highlight. The tower is to project a decorative light show complemented with sound effects.

The installation also becomes a background for many festivities taking place in Senayan City, including midnight shopping with "Hourly Surprises" giveaways, music performances and educational activities for children. (iru/mut)
