According to the traditional Chinese calendar, the New Year will start on Feb. 5.
To welcome the Year of the Pig, many Indonesians of Chinese descent have cleaned and decorated their homes, cut their hair and, of course, stocked up on angpaos (red envelopes).
However, there are other preparations that could bring better luck in the Year of the Pig.
Feng shui expert Djohar Koh said during the Imlek Market in Central Jakarta on Thursday that as the year changed the energy would be different too.
With that in mind, Djohar suggested some steps to minimize bad energy in the Year of the earth Pig.
The first thing to do is to find out which direction your home, office, room or even cubicle is facing with the help of a compass.
“Stand in the middle [of the room or building] and check the cardinal direction,” said Djohar.
In the Year of the earth Pig, it's not recommended to do a big renovation, such as room renovation or dismantling of a wall, in buildings or rooms facing west, northwest, southeast and southwest.

“It’s better to postpone [the renovation],” said Djohar, adding that a renovation will activate bad energy.
Meanwhile, for those who live or work in a room with a southwest-facing front door, Djohar suggested to install a metal wind chime comprising six tubes.
“Metal elements can help balance the earth's elements [in the Year of the earth Pig],” he said.
As for a room with a south-facing door, Djohar suggested to add a red decoration, such as a red doormat, pillow or ribbon to bring in positive energy.
For a room with a northeast-facing door, Djohar, who has been working as a feng shui expert for around 15 years, recommended to use six coins as a decoration.
“You can use any coins, including Rp 1,000 [7 US cents] coin,” he said.
Those who live in a southeast-facing home are advised to add a bamboo tree in a vase containing water as a decoration. “It would help to avoid bad energy related to legal issues, such as ticket fines or contract agreements,” said Djohar. (mut)
