Indonesia will feature as a so-called market focus country at next month's 2019 London Book Fair and has given Londoners a preview into its rich culture of food, fashion and more.
rior to Indonesia’s participation as a Market Focus Country at the 2019 London Book Fair at the Olympia exhibition center in London from March 12-14, the organizing committee, supported by the Creative Economy Agency (Bekraf), hosted two pre-events to acquaint Londoners with Indonesian culture.
On Feb. 13, the committee presented Indonesian dishes to London-based food bloggers at The Providores and Tapa Room.
Titled “Spice Island Revisited Lunch”, the event was in line with Indonesia’s theme for the London Book Fair, "17,000 Islands of Imagination".
During the event, Indonesian culinary experts Petty Elliott and Santhi Serad collaborated with London-based chef Peter Gordon in creating dishes inspired by the spice islands, namely Run, Banda, Ternate, Tidore and Halmahera.

Following the lunch, the organizing committee hosted a cultural event titled “Islands of Imagination: An Indonesian Cultural Late” at Asia House last Friday.
The event featured a collection by fashion designer Didiet Maulana highlighting the richness of traditional fabrics, music performances by singer Nyak Ina “Ubiet” Raseuki, jazz guitarist Tesla Manaf and traditional Melayu drummer Shafur Bachtiar, graphic and illustration artwork by Tommy Chandra and more.
In a statement received by The Jakarta Post, organizing committee chairwoman Laura Bangun Prinsloo said the events aimed to showcase Indonesia’s cultural diversity and encourage Indonesian creative talent in London to come forth.
“I hope the two events will create enthusiasm among residents of London for welcoming Indonesia as a Market Focus Country at the 2019 London Book Fair,” said Laura. (jes/wng)
