A group exhibition in Jakarta featuring four artists showcases their respective take on the issue of artistic autonomy.
In modern society, there is the archetype of an artist whose mind reacts to the world around them differently to that of most people.
While one could argue and debate over the truth behind the archetype, a group exhibition titled "Challenging Autonomy" aims to provide a context to this perception.
Held at LATAR Artspace in South Jakarta until May 17, the exhibition features the works of artists Farhan Siki, Nasirun, Samuel Indratma and duo indieguerillas.
Made up of couple Santi Ariestyowanti and Dyatmiko “Miko” Bawono, indieguerillas is known for its pop culture references mixed with a uniquely Indonesian perspective and iconography.
“Our works are a sort of autocritique ritual and self-reflection method as Javanese people living in a wave of global consumerism, where everything is made instantaneous,” indieguerillas said.
