Art Basel cancels 2020 edition

rt Basel, the premier art fair that brings together the most prominent artists and galleries from all over the world, is canceled for 2020. The announcement was made via their official website and on Instagram.
“While there are signs of hope as individual countries are coming out of lockdown, the global situation remains precarious, and, unfortunately, too many uncertainties remain to go ahead with the fair,” says the announcement. Initially, the fair was postponed from its June schedule to September.
The next edition will now be from June 17 to June 20, 2021. Earlier this year, the Hong Kong edition of the fair was also canceled due to the coronavirus.
In the meantime, you can still get your fill of contemporary and classic masterpieces via Art Basel’s online viewing rooms.
Art Basel debuted in the 1970s when Basel gallerists Ernst Beyeler, Trudl Bruckner, and Balz Hilt conceived an international art fair. They met great success with 16,000 visitors at the inaugural show and the participation of 90 galleries and 30 publishers from 10 countries.
In the ’00s, Art Basel debuted the Miami Beach edition and, in 2010, welcomed its Hong Kong edition.
