T

he children of renowned singer Didi Kempot, 10-year-old Saka and 3-year-old Seika, have collaborated with teen singer Betrand Peto to honor Didi in a song called “Bapak” (Father).

The late singer wrote and released “Bapak” in 2017 as a tribute to his own father, whom he said worked tirelessly to support his family despite his old age.

The collaboration started when Betrand’s father, Indonesian comedian-host Ruben Onsu, contacted Yan Vellia, the wife of Didi, to express his condolences over the singer’s passing on May 5.

“We talked about our past plan to bring our children together to perform a single,” Yan told kompas.com.

The music video for “Bapak” was uploaded on Thursday on MOP Channel, an entertainment channel on YouTube founded by Ruben. The video features black-and-white footage of the late singer, including moments of him with his children. As of the time of writing, the video has been viewed more than 1.6 million times.

In mid-May, Betrand also performed a cover of one of Didi’s most popular songs, “Sewu Kuto” (A Thousand Cities).

Born in Surakarta in 1966, Didi was known as a singer of campursari (a blend of traditional Javanese and modern music). He’s also often referred to as the “Godfather of Broken Hearts” as fans strongly relate to his sad love songs. (wir/wng)
