K-drama addiction spikes during COVID-19 pandemic, survey finds

recent survey by the Indonesian Institute of Sciences (LIPI) has found that viewership of Korean dramas (K-dramas) has spiked in Indonesia as COVID-19 pandemic forces people spend more time at home.

As many as 924 respondents, aged between 14 and 68 years old, across the country took part in the survey that was conducted online from April 16 to 18.

The survey revealed that 91 percent of the respondents, or 842 people, said they watched K-dramas regularly. Meanwhile, 73 said they started watching shortly after the pandemic hit Indonesia in March. 

“Prior to the pandemic, our respondents had an average watch time of around 2.7 hours per day. During the pandemic, the average watch time has increased to 4.6 hours per day,” LIPI stated in the results of the survey published on Friday.

The survey also found that 41.3 percent of respondents watched K-dramas more than six times a week, while 28.4 percent watched four to six times a week and the remaining 30.3 percent watched up to three times a week.

The respondents of the survey were predominantly female, at about 92.6 percent.
