hen the KRI Nanggala-402 submarine was announced missing on April 22, netizens took to social media to pray for the safety of the crew with the hashtag #prayforKRINanggala402. After a challenging search for the missing submarine, the Indonesian Military (TNI) announced on April 24 that the submarine had sunk and had been discovered at about 830 meters below sea level.

The announcement also confirmed the deaths of the 53 crew members. By that evening, the hashtag #OnEternalPatrol had flooded the internet and was being used as an expression of condolence and sympathy for the families of the sailors. In addition to expressing these sentiments through words, many artists made digital drawings and other forms of artwork in tribute to KRI Nanggala-402.

More than a month after the announcement, tributes continue to pour in on social media, in the form of videos, photos, poems, condolences and more.

Alvin Resqy, @alvinresqy on Twitter, an illustrator based in Jakarta, created a piece called “To the Horizon” that has been liked by more than 200,000 people and shared by thousands.

Boundless horizon

“When I heard that the submarine had been confirmed to be sunken, I wanted to provide a new perspective to the people and the affected families: that the crew were not gone. I wanted to help them feel and realize that their loved ones were okay somewhere,” Alvin told The Jakarta Post.
