riter-director Riri Riza's upcoming movie, Paranoia, stars award-winning actors Nicholas Saputra, Lukman Sardi and Nirina Zubir, as well as emerging talent Caitlin North Lewis. Now in post-production, Miles Film unveiled the movie’s promotional poster on Tuesday through social media channels.

Moviegoers can expect Paranoia to be quite different from Riza's previous work, which ran the gamut from drama to romance and even horror, but never a thriller.

"Paranoia is my first thriller film. I think it is the right time to tell an intense story [in] response to our current condition," Riza said on June 15 as quoted by Antara News.

The idea for the movie came at the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, when people were feeling anxious and uncertain. Producer Mira Lesmana said in a separate statement that she felt the need to express the various emotions she felt during the early days of lockdowns and restrictions in a cinematic work.

"Riri and I discussed how to channel all these feelings and emotions into a [movie]. Then we created a story, taking into account that the production would take place during the pandemic, and we got Paranoia," said Mira.

Paranoia is the story of one family and a stranger. Veteran screenwriter Jujur Prananto penned the screenplay alongside Riza and Mira.

Preproduction started last November, when Jakarta was seeing a rise in daily cases following the long holiday to mark the Prophet Muhammad’s Birthday, and done entirely online. Meanwhile, the move was shot in a location that was closed specifically for the production.

Paranoia is premiering at the 25th annual Bucheon International Fantastic Film Festival (BIFAN), which runs from July 8 to 18 in South Korea. BIFAN is known for focusing on niche genres such as horror, thriller, mystery and fantasy produced in East and Southeast Asia.
