An Indonesian dance veteran has experienced everything from working with Madonna to creating his own routines
ntense energy emanates from Eko Supriyanto as he leaps and turns, twirling his fists around following the dynamic beats of the traditional Papuan song “Apuse”. The Indonesian dancer-choreographer demonstrated the choreography that he created for Indonesia Menari 2021 during an online press conference on Aug. 12 to promote the event.
Held annually since 2012, it is now the first time that the dance competition will be held virtually because of the pandemic.
"It's an extraordinary and special opportunity for many of us," Eko said.
"Thanks to virtual technology, Indonesians from many different parts of the country can now take part in the competition despite the pandemic."
An expected 30,000 people will participate in the virtual dance event, more than quadruple the number of participants from the previous year.
Eko is optimistic that the country will discover great new dancing talent through the competition.
