Nigeria launched negotiations Friday with the Indonesian government in a bid to save the lives of two of its citizens in Indonesia who are on death row, a website in Abuja reported Sunday.
In a meeting with Indonesia Ambassador to Nigeria Nurhadi Djazuli, Nigerian Foreign Minister Ojo Maduekwe asked that the two Nigerians, who have been sentenced to death for drug-related crimes, be spared.
"At this stage, it is not a matter of legality, but a matter of diplomacy, so I have to appeal on the issue," the minister was quoted as saying by leadershipnigeria.com.
In the meeting, Maduekwe reminded Ambassador Nurhadi of the long standing good ties between the two nations, both at bilateral and multilateral levels, especially as co-members of the Non-Aligned movement.
An official at the Nigerian Embassy in Jakarta told The Jakarta Post on Sunday that at least 22 Nigerians were on death roll in Indonesia.
