Melly finds writing religious songs hard

JAKARTA: Melly Goeslaw, perhaps the most sought-after songwriter by Indonesian filmmakers today, said writing soundtracks for a religious movie was a great challenge.

"It is quite difficult and full of challenges as there are many boundaries. I have to listen to suggestions from various parties so I can have a better understanding of what a religious song is," she said.

Melly and her guitarist husband, Anto Hoed, have been working together to write music scores for Ketika Cinta Bertasbih (When Love Recites), a religious movie based on the novel by author Habibburahman el-Shirazy, who also wrote Ayat-ayat Cinta (Love Verses), the film version of which had been a huge success.

She said she had to be extra careful in writing the songs as they should be different from other songs she had written.

"This is my first experience and I need to be extra careful in doing this. I used to write love songs for teenagers and now I have been asked to write a religious song. Thank God, they give me a lot of time," she said.

It is said that Melly will write four songs for the film; so far she has completed one, titled "Tuhan Beri Aku Cinta" (God Gives Me Love). JP
