Host Indonesia lost its hope of any winning medals in the women's beach volleyball competition at the Asian Beach Games after its two teams crashed out of the competition Thursday. The Indonesian pair of Ayu Cahyaning Siam and Devota Rahawarin went down to Ayumi Kusano and Mutsumi Ozaki of Japan 21-14, 16-21, 12-15.
In another quarterfinal match, the team of Ni Putu Timy Yudhani and Yokbeth Kapasiang were outclassed by Yang Li and Anna Hu, who won in straight sets 21-12, 21-15.
"They (women's teams) prepared for the Games in only a short period of time and lacked the chance of making overseas tryouts due to a limited budget," head coach Slamet Mulyanto said.
Indonesia keeps its hope of winning medals in the beach volleyball alive, however, thanks to its men's first team of Andy Ardiansyah and Koko Prasetyo Darkuncoro and second pair of Dian Putra Santosa and Suratno, who marched to the quarterfinals after edging out their opponents in straight sets.
In their last preliminary match, Andy and Koko beat Rhovyl Verayo and Jonrey Sasing of the Philippines 21-16, 21-15. Dian and Suratno downed Hasan Aqeel Qarqoor and Ayman Hamed Haroona of Brunei Darussalam 23-21, 21-13.
In the quarterfinals, Andy and Koko will meet Omani pair Khalifa Hamed Al Jabri and Badar Said Al Subhi, while Dian and Suratno will face the Japanese team Yoshiumi Hasegawa and Shimpei Aoki.
In the women's event, Thailand will take on Malaysia, China play Kazakhstan and Japan meet Thailand.
