ENPASAR: The rate of farm land conversion for non-agricultural purposes, including construction of tourism facilities and residential areas, is worrying, as at least 349 hectares of farm land are lost annually, an official said.

"If this continues without control, we will lose 17,245 hectares of rice fields over the next five years", Wayan Gunawan, the spokesman of a Golkar Party faction was quoted by Antara news agency as saying on Sunday at the Bali Legislative Council.

Bali, which currently has 84,118 hectares of farm lands, needs to cater for some 3.5 million people.

"The shrinking area of farm lands threatens the stability of our food production," Wayan said.

In a related development, Bali Governor Made Mangku Pastika has reiterated that his administration had grouped productive farm lands into strategic areas under regional bylaws, in order to help control the shift in usage of the lands. -- JP
