`Little Pink Book', a guide for the stylish shopaholic

akartans drawn by books on good food and wine can now turn to the Little Pink Book, a guide to shopping and style, for all their fashion needs.

Written by Fitria Yusuf and Alexandra Dewi, Little Pink Book is basically a shopping directory for fashion lovers.

It is divided into eight chapters: lingerie, apparel, bags, shoes, jewelry, watches, sunglasses and one-stop shopping.

Fitria "Fifi" Yusuf used to work for Dewi magazine as a fashion market editor but now writes for Eve magazine in her "Shop for Your Size" column.

Her passion for fashion drove her to open a one-stop shopping boutique called Ivy in 2006. She also co-founded Twinkle-Twinkle, a company producing customized crystal casings for smart phones. She is now a commissioner at PT Mitra International Resources Tbk.

Alexandra Dewi has written three books: I Beg Your Prada, Curhat Perempuan Metro (I Beg Your Prada, Metropolitan Women Share Feelings); Queen of Hearts, Kartu Idaman untuk Memenangkan Hati Pria Idaman (Queen of Hearts, How to Win Men's Hearts) and The Heart Inside The Heart, Susahnya Menyatukan Dua Hati (The Heart Inside The Heart, The Difficulties with Tying Two Hearts Together).

"I have been writing about romance and relationships, and I like shopping, but writing about it is a lot more difficult. It was a challenge for me to write this book," Dewi said.

Fifi said she and Dewi decided to write the book when they both came across difficulties trying to track down specific items of fashion.

"We live in Jakarta and we don't even know where to find what we are after. What about those visiting Jakarta? Our book tries to encourage people to shop in Jakarta and support Indonesian products as well, because when you know where you are going, Jakarta has everything," Fifi said at the book launch.

Besides pointing shoppers in the right direction to the hippest stores, the book also provides fashion tips. For example, the apparel chapter offers guidance on picking the right clothes for each body type (page 21-24) while the section on bags discusses ways to keep bags in top condition (page 61-62).

The book also touches on fashion investments, and the right way to go about buying expensive iconic bags, shoes and jewelry.

"We suggest people buy fashion items that can act as investment, as in items which can be sold again. People don't want to buy expensive leather bags only to find them put on sale three months later," Fifi said.

She said the book not only provided information on well-known brands but also custom-made items, tailored goods and negotiable pieces.

"We want to encourage people to dress in accordance to their mood. Their dress doesn't have to be expensive or glamorous," she said.

While the book focuses exclusively on women's fashion, Fifi and Dewi plan to release an edition for men if the demand is high enough.

Samuel Mulia, a fashion observer, said the book could help socialites in Jakarta keep in touch with their fashion sense.

"Jakarta socialites are very loyal to their favorite brands, despite the economic downturn. For example, if they are fans of Armani, they will still buy Armani, but they will choose second-line Emporium Armani," Samuel said.

With so many places to shop in Jakarta, this 146-page book may not cover the entire fashion spectrum. But it certainly goes a long way to providing local and foreign fashionistas with a glimpse of what they can expect from Jakarta.
