JAKARTA: A new medical treatment called minimally invasive spinal surgery, offering faster surgical recovery for spinal pain sufferers, will be introduced in Indonesia soon.
The new innovation limits tissue damage that occurs during surgery by curtailing surgical incisions as compared to traditional surgical procedures, a symposium heard Saturday.
“Minimal invasive spinal surgery’s results will be similar to, or even better than, the results achieved the conventional way,” neurosurgeon Heri Aminuddin said.
The symposium marked the soft launch of the WISH SSMH Spine Center, the first major clinic to specialize in spinal pain cases.
The spine center has been established with the cooperation of the Wooridul International Spine Hospital in South Korea and the Sahid Sahirman Memorial Hospital in Jakarta.
“The conventional operation involves a long procedure [operation, hospitalization and rehabilitation], and can cause excessive bleeding, and after-surgery pain, sometimes more painful than that experienced pre-surgery,” Heri said.
It does have one shortcoming, however. “It is more expensive because the apparatus used is costly,” Wawan said. — JP
