AKASSAR, South Sulawesi: Former singer Andi Meriem Matalatta, 53, who died in Amsterdam last week, was buried at the  Tana Maridie family cemetery park in Barru regency on Wednesday.

Andi Meriem, who was affectionately known as “the Pearl from the East” back in the 1980s, was in Netherlands on holiday along with her only daughter Herly Merdania.

However, on Saturday, or three days after their arrival, Andi Meriem complained about her diabetes and was briefly treated at a hospital in Zoocetemeer but could not be saved.

Upon arriving at the Soekarno-Hatta airport in Jakarta on Tuesday, her corpse was kept in
morgue for a night.

The body arrived in Makassar on a Garuda flight early Wednesday to the reception of a large crowd of relatives and mourners at the airport.

Among them included VIP members of the provincial and Makassar city administration offices. The funeral was held later on Wednesday. — JP
