JAKARTA: Telco provider Research In Motion Ltd (RIM) confirmed on Monday its commitment to apply a filtering solution for BlackBerry subscribers in Indonesia as soon as possible
AKARTA: Telco provider Research In Motion Ltd (RIM) confirmed on Monday its commitment to apply a filtering solution for BlackBerry subscribers in Indonesia as soon as possible.
The Canadian-based company said that it shared the concern of Communications and Information Technology Minister Tifatul Sembiring over filtering Internet content in Indonesia.
“RIM has been engaged with its [local] carrier partners and the government on this matter and continues to make it a top priority to implement satisfactory technical solutions with its partners,” it said in a press statement, which responded to earlier pleas from the minister on his micro-blogging website Twitter that the company comply with local regulations.
Tifatul said the ministry would not negotiate and would directly block the service if the company refused to comply with this request.
Cooperating with four local telecommunication providers, there are currently more than 2.5 million BlackBerry subscribers in Indonesia.
The Indonesian government filed its formal objection to the company in August last year and the company has been cooperative including setting up a local representative, PT RIM Indonesia. — JP
