AKARTA: As part of their investigation of a document forgery case involving Soekarno-Hatta International Airport’s immigration chief Rochadi Iman Santoso, police questioned on Thursday the director general of immigration at the Law and Human Rights Ministry, Bambang Irawan.

“We’re questioning [Bambang] as a witness to complement the statements given by suspect Rochadi,” police spokesman Sr. Comr. Rikwanto told reporters.

The general crimes directorate’s state security chief, Adj. Sr. Comr. Daniel Bolly Tifaona, said investigators had questioned Bambang for four hours, until 2 p.m.

“I’m afraid I can’t give you any details on the results from the session, other than saying that [Bambang] was very cooperative throughout the process,” he said.

Rochadi was arrested on Feb. 24 by detectives from the Jakarta Police for allegedly issuing a fake travel document for Singaporean businessman Toh Ke Ngsiong in August 2009.

He has been charged with document forgery under the Criminal Code and may face up to six years’ imprisonment if found guilty.

Rochadi’s arrest is deemed to be the first stern action taken against what critics have called unscrupulous immigration officials.
