MBON: A convicted Ambon bomber, identified as BM, 24, escaped from Ambon Class II Penitentiary on Tuesday by sawing through the window bars in a cell block bathroom.
The warden, Faozul Ansori, said that BM escaped at around 5 a.m. after filing through the window bars. A murder convict, identified as HS, 24, also escaped.
Faozul said that prison guards learned of the escape after an inmate reported the sawn-through window bars.
“The witness reported his findings to correctional officers and we later reported the case to the police,” said Faozul as quoted by kompas.com.
He confirmed that BM was behind a series of bombings in some parts of Ambon, including some churches. “Yes, BM was involved in the Ambon bombings, while the other inmate was involved in a murder,” he said.
Ambon Island and Lease Islands Police chief Adj. Comr. Suharwiyono said the police had formed a team to investigate the case and pursue the two convicts.
BM was initially arrested at Tanjung Priok Port, Jakarta, before being transferred to Ambon. The police also arrested BM’s accomplices.
HS was detained after committing a murder in Pelauw village, Haruku Islands, Central Maluku regency.
