heNational Intelligence Agency (BIN) has tracked down terrorist leaderSantoso and his cells using a recently-uploaded YouTube video featuring the country's most wanted terrorist fugitive.
'We are intercepting [online videos]'¦ we already know the sources and from where the video was uploaded. We will not stay still,' BIN chief Lt. Gen. Marciano Norman said at the State Palace on Thursday.
The video, called Risalah Kepada Ummat Islam di Kota Poso (A Message to the Muslim Community in Poso), was uploaded by an account under the name Al-Himmah on Sunday.
In the six-minute video, a man believed to be Santoso called on his followers to keep fighting National Police counterterrorism force Densus 88, saying that the squad had slain, assaulted and jailed dozens of jihadists.
National Police spokesperson Insp. Gen. Ronny F. Sompie said Santoso alias Abu Wardah, the leader of the East Indonesia Mujahideen, was responsible for a number of terror attacks in Poso, Central Sulawesi.
Marciano, former Jakarta Military Command chief, said using online videos had been a common method by terrorist groups to spread their messages.
'Now I hope the people respond to the videos with maturity. We should not follow such a call. It is a misleading message that could jeopardize the nation,' he said.
National Police chief Gen. Timur Pradopo shared Marciano's opinion, saying that his force had engaged an intensive cooperation with the Communication and Information Ministry to block the video.
'We don't want the people watch such a video,' he said.
Communication and Information Minister Tifatul Sembiring said his ministry would ask YouTube to ban the video. (dic)
