he suicide rate in Singapore was 10.27 per 100,000 people in 2012, up an alarming 29 percent from 8.13 in 2011, a suicide prevention non-profit is reporting.
The Samaritans of Singapore (SOS) said in a press release that 467 people killed themselves last year, up from 361 suicides in the previous year. More than 80 percent of the deaths came from the 20-to-29-year-old demographic. The figures, include citizens and permanent residents.
'People in their twenties are exploring their identity, discovering new responsibilities, and building their career and their family, all of which can be very stressful,' Christine Wong, executive director of SOS, said.
Wong suggested that the community destigmatize suicide by letting loved ones know that it would be okay to talk about their distress or suicidal feelings and to seek help.
