he city administration will go ahead with its plan tochange the names of two streets near the National Monument (Monas) because, according to a presidential regulation, the governor has the authority tochange the name of main streets.
Jimly Ashidiqqie, who chairs committee team 17 assigned to study the planned change of two protocol roads in the city, confirmed on Tuesday that the committee would propose the name change of Jl. Medan Merdeka Utara to Jl. Sukarno and Jl Medan Merdeka Selatan to Jl M. Hatta.
Initially, the city proposed to change the names of the four streets surrounding the national monument.
The committee had proposed to change the names of Jl. Medan Merdeka Utara to Jl. Soekarno, Jl. Medan Medeka Selatan to Jl. M. Hatta, Jl. Medan Merdeka Barat to Jl. Ali Sadikin, and Jl. Medan Merdeka Timur to Jl. Soeharto.
The committee will give the proposal to the governor, who would then send the proposal to the cabinet secretary.
Previously, Governor Joko Widodo turned down the proposal because according to him, the President has the sole authority to make such changes.
