The Djarum Superliga club tournament is slated for next month with upped cash prizes and adjusted regulations aimed at generating more appeal for the competition.

'€œWe will increase the total purse from Rp 1.6 billion [US$132,000] last year to Rp 2 billion this year in the hope it will lure more of the world'€™s top players,'€ tournament director Achmad Budiharto told a press conference at Hotel Indonesia Kempinski in Jakarta on Wednesday.

'€œWe have also revamped several regulations to make the tournament more competitive,'€ he said.

Among the new changes is a decision to not limit the number of foreign players recruited by local teams, though the teams are allowed to play them in only two of the tournament'€™s five matches.

Also, the team subsidy for the recruitment of a foreign player has been upped from $1,000 to $1,500.

Despite the organizers'€™ efforts, world'€™s top player Lee Chong Wei was not on the provisional competitors list made available to the media, though clubs could still make roster changes before Jan. 10.

The Malaysian badminton star steered Musica Champions Kudus to the championship in the men'€™s division last year. Jaya Raya won the women'€™s division.

In 2011, SGS PLN Bandung was the champion with Chong Wei in its lineup.

The provisional competitors list showed seven men'€™s teams and eight women'€™s teams would take part in the tournament to be held at DBL Arena Surabaya from Feb. 3 to 9.

'€œLast year we had 10 men'€™s and eight women'€™s teams. We expect 10 in each division this year,'€
Achmad said.

Held biennially since 2007, this year'€™s tournament is the first attempt to make it an annual event, part of an effort to rejuvenate badminton development in the country.

'€œBadminton has been becoming far more competitive, while our performance [in international events] has been sluggish up to 2013,'€ Yan Hariyadi, who represents the Djarum Foundation, said.

'€œThis is part of our commitment. Hopefully, Indonesian badminton can regain its past glory,'€ he said. Indonesia has collected the most wins in the Thomas Cup, the world'€™s most prestigious men'€™s team competition, but it has failed to repeat it since 2000. '€œThe tournament is expected to provide leverage for our players,'€ Yan said.

The tournament is played under the format of three singles and two doubles matches.

Jaya Raya is very likely to play Busanan Ongbungrungpan of Thailand in its bid to retain the title.

'€œWe have good prospects in both our doubles teams, so we need to steal a point from the singles,'€ Retno Kustiyah, the club'€™s spokesman, said.
