The Belu Regency Police in East Nusa Tenggara have said they will tighten security in the border area with Timor Leste to combat drug smuggling.

Timor Leste has been suspected of being used by international drug rings to smuggle drugs across the border to Indonesia.

Belu Police chief Adj.Sr. Comr. Daniel Yudo Ruhoro said police on duty at the border would make full use of the available facilities to prevent illicit trade across the border.

"All equipment and resources will be fully utilized in the fight against smuggling drugs into the country," Daniel said in Atambua, the capital of Belu regency, on Monday as quoted by Antara news agency.

The border gate at Mota Ain in the regency of Belu has been reported as vulnerable to international drug trafficking because of minimal detecting equipment there.

"In principle we will optimize the use of the equipment and resources we have," Daniel said.

Yudo added the East Nusa Tenggara (NTT) Police continued to coordinate with the National Narcotics Agency (BNN) and the police headquarters in Jakarta in the fight against international drug rings.

In border areas police cooperate with other elements including the military and immigration and customs offices, he said.
