eing a good Muslim is analogous to exemplary civic conduct, but one should not conflate Islam with the state, several academics asserted in a book launch on Tuesday at the Muhammadiyah Center of Study in Menteng, Central Jakarta.
Pro-pluralism organization the Maarif Institute launched the book called 24 Weeks to a Civic Example: A Muslim Student's Agenda, which encourages the idea that being religious is synonymous with being a good citizen.
Targeting high school students, academics speaking at the launch warned of the dangers of religious instruction that must be addressed in the country's national curriculum.
'The current Islamic studies curriculum needs to be revised. We have been brought up to think that Islam is all about the history of [Muslim] wars and nationhood, which translates into the belief that Islam is a state,' said Bambang Q. Anees, who is a philosophy lecturer at State Islamic University (UIN) Sunan Gunung Djati in Bandung and the book's coauthor.
