he Public Works Ministry officially began the construction of Gondang Dam in Karanganyar, Central Java, on Tuesday, as part of the government's food-security program. The dam is expected to help increase the water supply for Karanganyar and Sragen.
Currently, the irrigation system relies entirely on the water supply from the Bengawan Solo River, which usually dries up during the dry season, causing drought and crop failures in both regencies.
'Based on the master plan and a feasibility study conducted in 2010, we received a recommendation to build a dam to overcome the water-deficit problem in Karanganyar and Sragen,' Djoko said in a written statement.
The Rp 636 billion (US$53.9 million) project will be funded by the state budget and is expected to be complete in 2018. Gondang Dam is being built on an 88.25-hectare site and is projected to have a total volume of 10 million cubic meters, enough to irrigate 4,680 hectares of land, provide a raw-water supply of 200 liters per second, as well as a recreation spot.
