housands of residents from all walks of life in Semarang, Central Java, attended a commemoration of the Five-Day Semarang Battle that was focused in the Tugu Muda area of the city on Tuesday evening.
Also in attendance were Defense Minister Purnomo Yusgiantoro and Indonesian Military (TNI) Army chief of staff Gen. Gatot Nurmantyo.
The event was highlighted with a drama that related the course of the battle. Semarang Social Affairs, Youth and Sports Office head Gurun Risyadmoko said the drama involved 100 participants, in addition to songs and laser and firework displays.
'We also set up four wide-screen [televisions], on Jl. Dr. Sutomo, Jl. Pandanaran, Jl. Soegiyopranoto and Jl. Imam Bonjol,' said Gugun.
The Five-Day Semarang Battle is part of the city's history of freedom fighting against Japanese soldiers. It took place from Oct. 15 to 20, 1945.
